Sun Microsystems offered Solaris 8 in the free binary license program. You coulddownload Solaris 10 for freeafter registering. Solaris 8 is no longer available on the Sun site. If you have an 18 Gig driveon your machine, you can get Solaris 9 to run on a Sparc 20, although it is not supported.Solaris 10 will not run on Sparc 20's (or even Ultra 1's). Ultra 2's and beyond will run Solaris 10. I have no knowledge of Solaris 11.You may be able to find a copy of Solaris 8 somewhere. In March 2014, a google search of sol-8-hw4-sparc-v1.iso showed up acouple of places you could download the iso files.

Solaris OS is a UNIX operating system initially developed by Sun Microsystems, and now maintained by Oracle Corporation under the name of Oracle Solaris. It is available for download as installable and live ISO images that can be burned onto blank CD discs using any CD/DVD burning software, as well as. Open solaris free download. CMake CMake is an open-source, cross-platform family of tools designed to build, test and package software.

As an alternative, the freeBSD has a Sparc port which I have loaded on an Ultra 1.I am not sure how stable it is.

All of the information on this page can be found on the Sun web site witha little digging.

If you want to download the disks, you can download the diskimages to your PC and convert the images to a CD there. You should have a DSL or Cable modem as the images total about 800Megabytes. There are three disk images that you download oneat a time. The first creates a CD which is bootable from a Sparcand installs the Solaris 8 operating system. It is called theinstall CD. The second is all the packages found on the install asindividual packages. Maybe? This CD is not used during theinitial installaiton. It is calls Solaris Software Volumme 1. The thirdCD is called Solaris Software Volume 2 and contains assorted supplimentarysoftware like zip, bzip, and other utilities. This CD gets called forduring the install.

Once you've downloaded the images onto your PC you will need to createthe CD's with a CD Writer. First you will unzip the compressed imageson your hard drive and then rename each of the images to have theextension .iso so the CD burner program will properly recognise it.If you are using Adaptec EZ CD Creator or Nero Burning ROM, from the filemenu select 'Create CD from Image' and point the open dialog with pops upat the .iso file. In the Adaptec program you have to change the filterin the open dialog from .CLI to .ISO. Then you create the CD's

You can do the install serveral ways. The one I have tried and usedsuccessfully is to do a full install to an empty disk (the install makes itbe empty to start).

Note:The install comes with 3 CD's. An install CD, a Software CD 1and a Software CD 2. There are also some documentation CD's. The obvious thingto do is boot from the Solaris install CD. This puts you into some sort ofweb install which I have never gotten to work correctly. Boot from the Software CD 1If you wonder why I coded highlighted this in red is that after a disk failure, I spentthree days trying to install starting with the install disk before I mistakenly bootedfrom the software disk 1 and got things to work.

  1. Turn on the Sun and while it is checking memory press Stop-a. Hold the stopkey down and press the letter 'a'.
  2. Open the CD player and insert the Software Disk 1 CD and close the CD player.
  3. at the OK prompt, type: boot cdrom
  4. Follow the install instructions

While I prefer pkg-get to add software to the Sun,There are other ways to get free software for the Sun. Most of the GNU programs havebeen ported to the Sun Solaris environment. There is aDownload freeware for Sun (gcc, gdb, ddd, etc.) site with severalMost of these packages for Solaris 8 are set up as Sun Packages. To install one of these packages perform the followint steps:

  1. Download the software using Netscape or Firefox.
  2. su or login as root.
  3. Run the command:
    pkgadd -d <path_to_saved_package>
  4. You will be prompted to confirm installation of the package.

The Ce editor and terminal emulator is also available for the home network
